seems the guys arent interested on pt-br > eng-usa translations (to change - -"), so i have to request some more time (at all the movie dont even has released on cinema).

a shame... i really love brazilian cinema and i try to bring some subs and releases, but around here the most of people just dont care.

There's now another version out (probably a reencode), but still noone has made English subs :(

@lest:

I didn't really understand. Did you say there are already Poertuguese subtitles out that just need to be translated?

Let's hope someone will find the time :)

Why, you don't speak Portuguese well enough?
I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate!

Do you use something like DivXLand Media Subtitler (http://www.divxland.org/subtitler.php)?

As there's no subtitle for this movie yet, I'm making one, a portuguese subtitle but I won't be able to translate everything to english because there are so many "slangs" in the dialogues. Almost every meaning depends on the context, I'll try to finish the pt sub as soon as possible.
EDIT:
If everything goes right here, You'll see this movie with english subtitles.

lest

ok, please attach here. i'll ask for some "sub-team" take care of the translation and i do the corrections needed, im pro on slang\expression adaptation.

"
O Rio de Janeiro tem mais de 700 Favelas
Quase todas dominadas por traficantes armados até os dentes
É só nego de AR15, UZI,AK e por ae vai
No Resto do mundo essas armas são para fazer guerra
No Rio São as armas do Crime.

Porra vai me deixar desarmado? Borá meu irmão! Borá Porra! Porra Vai!
Está vendo o Fabio ae? Calma ae.
Deixa comigo. Esta vendo ele? Esta vendo ele?
Calma ae compadre.
Qual é Oliveira

"
Na verdade a paz no Rio vem de um equilíbrio delicado entre a munição dos bandidos e a corrupção dos policiais.
"
O que ta vendo ae?
Calma ae, Calma ae
"
Honestidade não faz parte do jogo.
"
O que ta vendo ae? O que ta pegando ae?
Deixa comigo compadre, pêra ae. ii caralho...
Já Viu o Fabio? Calma ae mane.
Qual foi?! Qual foi?!

"

"

Quem conhece o Babilônia ae?
Eu conheço.
Então tu vai puxar a ponta.
É do lado da principal, pela direita.

"

"
Faca na caveira e nada na carteira.
"
Meu nome é Capitão Nascimento, eu chefiava a equipe alpha do BOPE.
Eu já estava naquela guerra faz tempo e estava começando a ficar cansado dela.

Musica: Tropa de elite osso duro de roer, pega um, pega geral, também vai pegar você.

La vem dois irmaozinhos de 762
Dando tiro pro alto soh pra fazer teste
De "ina indrateque" pistol uzzy ou de winchester

De AK47 e na outra mao a metralha
Esse rap eh manero eu digo pra vcs

Mas se for alemao eu naum deixo pra amanha
Acabo com o safado, dou-lhe um tiro de fazan

Yes it does, the sub is out of synch by a few milisecounds. This can be fixed easily.

Pessoal, já fiz a sinconização da lengenda, agora só precisa de alguém para traduzir e conseguir entender as partes que não são muito compreensíveis...

Se tiver alguns erros no textos, não importa, porque acho que uma legenda em pt-br não tem importância, o que importa é a sincronização da legenda e a tradução para inglês. Se quiserem começar com a tradução, tá aqui a legenda sincronizada.

Para a versão "Arisco".
http://rapidshare.com/files/59307383/Tropa.De.Elite.BRAZiLiAN.WORKPRiNT.XviD-ARiSCO.rar.html

Para a outra versão, só falta fazer a sincronização da legenda por alguns milisegundos. Quando eu tiver paciência, eu faço.

Hi guys,

I really loved this movie, but I cant show it to my foreign friends becouse there is no english subtitles out there (At least I couldnt find any)...

So, I download the complete original version one, posted by "branzmf" (Thanks dude, translating and syncing the Subtitle would really take long).

And I think I translated 1/6 of it (not sure). Since my time is limited, I will have to do it in parts.

Please, do not continue my work, its wierd to read something translated by 2 diferent people when they dont revise each others work...

I'll continue, and it will probably be finished in 1 - 2 days.

Please, post your comments.

Thanks, peace.

Hi there,

I do agree with some, thank you very much...

Actually I did this from 23:00 to 01:00 in the morning, I was sleepy and antious to post it, didnt revise the work before posting.

We should have this translated very soon, and if you have suggestions on expressions that could match some brazillian ones which I couldnt think of any, such as: "Armados até os dentes" or "Com o Cú na mão", please do post it.

See ya.

Spartacus, eu não consegui entender algumas partes do filme muito bem e deixei alguns diálogos marcados com as tags, eles falam muito enrolado e fica difícil de advinhar/entender o que estão dizendo.
and if you have suggestions on expressions that could match some brazillian ones which I couldnt think of any, such as: "Armados até os dentes" or "Com o Cú na mão", please do post it.

Com o cú na mão (muito apavorado) - Scared as hell, scared to death
http://www.dicionarioinformal.com.br/buscar.php?palavra=cu-na-m%E3o

Armados até os dentes (Armed to the teeth) - Essa gíria os americanos também usam.

E "alemão" também é gíria o que significa "Inimigo" (Se alemão tentar invadir o morro, vai tomar bala no côco.)

Primeiro clique em "File" > "New subtitle"

E depois você só vai precisar fazer a sincronização dos textos, você só vai precisar usar esses comandos.

Alt+Z para marcar o inicio da exibição do texto na tela
Alt+X para marcar o final da exibição do texto

Alt+C marca o inicio da exibição do texto selecionado, usado corrigir a sincronização do texto selecionado.
Alt+V marca o final da exilçao do texto selecionado, usado para corrigir a sincronição do texto selecionado.

Alt+esquerda Para voltar alguns segundos do video
Alta+direito Para avançar alguns segundos do vídeo

Abs

Antonio

p.s.: pra traduzir partes como 'nao tem mole pra pm, civil ou militar' tento usar um ingles mais 'de rua' do tipo, 'we dont give a shit to the Civil police', eh questao de gosto, eu prefiro assim, abs!

Yea, you re right, anyway i ll do my best with the thousands of expressions.

BTW, 'german' is not 'enemy' ,in fact, 'german' in street language could mean anyone who doesnt belong to that favela. So, I translated to 'outsiders', cheers :-)

Hi there,

Do you guys think Squad fits better then Troop?

Do you think its better to use "hostile" or "enemy" instead of "German"? The movie will explain what "German" means latter, isnt it better to let foreign people know at Rio's favela they call enemys by "Alemão / German" ??

I used scared to death but I wasn't sure if there were any other better expression...

I'll use "armed to the teeth"...

Check this out dude:

Which is grammatically correct: "I wish I were you" or "I wish I was you"?
Older, prescriptive grammar books insist on the use of the subjunctive form "were". Most modern, descriptive grammar books accept both "were" and "was" as being grammatically acceptable, but they suggest that "I wish I were" is more appropriate in formal contexts.

And why there are so many people translating the movie?
Are we gonna correct each other and release only one version, or we are going to release them all? lol.

Pessoal, para agilizar o processo, usem a legenda que eu fiz, já está tudo sincronizado. Foram mais de 1880 textos para sincronizar. Se quiserem, não precisa começar do zero.

Sou bom em sincronização, essa é para a versão Arisco, com a versão nsiervi também funciona.

Hello Fellas, as a brand new member, i am offering myself to do the translations for english, but i dont have any idea how to make the subtitles anyway...so, any help?

Hey mate.I'm up for it as well. But guys I see a lot of people trying to make it and no working force have been used for now.

I'm brazilian but I live and spain and used to live in the UK. I could help you out.
We could work out something like 3 or 4 guys together. I mean, for exemple I do from minute "x to "y". you from "r" to "z",another guy from "a" to "B" and son on.

The native english speakers could do their job and pass it on to me. I could do what I would say the "hard translation" and you guys the "native" ones could refine my work and me and another guy from Brazil could reanalize your translation and refine yours as well.

In the end you the "native" one would make sugestions for some words and off we go.

So guys just let me know if you're up for it.

Ie: In the music when the singer says: "alemao" he's not relating to germans at all. This slang has been created to relate to someone very bad. The "german" name has only been taken because of the World War as they were known for been cruel as hell. That's all.

I didnt understand why you posted twice, twice lolz...

But okay, I am doing the best I can with the time I have...

BrKiller has added me to MSN and we diceded he will do the 2/2 part and I'll do the first half...

Any help is apreciated, if you want to translate a part, try the middle one, like from 800 to 1100 (subtitle ID)...

And sure, I want you to revise my work and discuss the better option in case of disagreement...

I am around subtitle ID 300 by now... Lets work guys, lots of my foreign friends are antious to understand the movie...

It would be almost done by now if it wasnt for the limmited time...

If someone with lots of free time will start it, then I'll just revise the work latter, but since almost 1 month passed by since the movie was released on the web and noone did it yet, I am doing it...

Lets work guys, gringos apreciating brazillian work, thats awsome...

fresh news. i guy called daeveman is now with 70% of the sub complete, he was out for a while and now posted it. when he release the sub i'll up here, but still working there cuz i really liked the commitment of you guys.

and was some time ago wondering about begin a new tracker, only with brazilian content, but not only dedicated to brazilians. we'll have a large team to translate and create subs for all the content, this will allow english speakers to enjoy br stuff. so, im recruiting translators (pt-br > eng), raw hunters and uploaders.

Whats up guys?

thats cool, loads of brazilians trying to do their best to translate the movie. BTW, I got some expressions translated to proper english so far, here they are:

'Squad Elite, hard nuts to crack'

'Germans': 'outsiders' (this is my opinion, i m from rio and i heard germans are everybody who doenst live in that specific hood, eg. you, me, the cops, all of us can be considered 'germans')

Spartacus: can you give some part to translate, then we can do it quicker?

Cheers

huh..."hard nuts to crack", i think this is the best translation for "osso duro de roer",
and about the slang "alemão" (german or outsiders), it's up to you to choose how you're going to translate it
But I'd choose "outsider" it suits better

I think we should join our forces and coordenate our efforts.
There so many Good Brazilian movies without English Subtitles.
I've got some ideas and I'd like to share with all of you.
Many people together working a little can do big things without
working too much, so I'd like to ask people willing to:
- Find the subs (.sub or .srt) files with the Brazilian subtitles of films in order
for us to start the translations
- Synchronize and/or resinc the subtitles
- Revise the subs done
- Translate the subs: The file will be divided into 4, 5 or six parts (even more, depending on how many translators will join us). Each translator does his own part. We could name the file as, e.g. "TropadeElitepart1.srt" or "TropaElite_1to150" (meaning the number of the lines).
- Join all the files translated and save into one (that's quite easy, they're like
txt files)
We will all have the password of a yahoo account. I'm creating this account now. Inside the account there'll be specific folders with the film's names and one named "Revision", "Sinc", "ReSinc", "SubsDone", which means that the subtitle is finished and revised.
Anyway, you next step now is to send me an email telling me what would
you like to do. I'll then send the yahoo ID email and password.
We should exchange msn as well.
The team name will be "Tropa de Elite" as this movie made me feel like
helping translating good Brazilian movies to English.
I'll do my best to coordinate this well. Soon enough we may as well create
a community in Orkut, in order to bring more people to join us.
I'd like to know your thoughts. Hope to hear from all of you very soon: morosozinhosp@hotmail.com

send a pm with your msn. Im looking for a major english speaker to rule a team of translators, if you can do will be very appreciated.

i have no discrimination between bad\good br films, the original project also include br tv shows, documentaries and short films. when we have at least a team to begin i'll launch the tracker and create a irc channel, im not rush.

let me know if anyone else interest.

If you guys wanna come on IRC, I have an IRC server =)

/server -m irc.NitrousIRC.net -j #subs

I'll register channel #subs then we can all talk and organize this better, too hard organizing through a Forum.

If you never used IRC, download mIRC @ www.mirc.com and type that command above

Any problems with the thousands of expressions and local slangs?

I'm still waiting for someone to decide and join a group to make it easier for all of us.

BTW, any idea for 'fogueteiro'? I dont want literal translation!

I have one sugestion... how about "runner"? maybe it's a literal translation, i'm not sure. Or just leave it as it is.
I've seen many brazilian movies with english subtitles, and i'm sure many translators don't translate the "nicknames"

keep the expressions coming...I'm an English speaker living in Brazil..I will do my best to help translate them and even if I can't, I love seeing them on paper.

"Armados até os dentes"- this is exactly the same in english-
"armed to the teeth"

we'll have a large team to translate and create subs for all the content, this will allow english speakers to enjoy br stuff.
You may want to consider a Collaborative editor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collaborative_editor) or some kind of revision control for this project to increase productivity..

How in God's name, am I going to translate "Aspirante a Oficial" and "Aspira"??

Lol, what do you think? "Officer to-be" ?? lol...

To make it simple and straight to the point, I suggest you use "rookie" as a translation to "aspira".

Great work on the subtitles so far guys, keep up the good work. And post any questions you might have so the rest of us can help you out ;)

Hi there,

After some (complicated) days, missing, I am posting now...

Can anyone say for sure, that there already is a full English subtitle out there?

If not, I'd like to propose a course of action, I am bringing up a DOTPorject software only and will be posting the URL shortly...

DOTProject is used to manage projects, I'll register the translators and the revisers, and will post tasks and deadlines for the work to be done and posted on the task menu.

We are doing it way too disorganized, and when you don’t have task to do, you get unmotivated by the size of the complete subtitle file.

I need:

2 - Translators
2 - Spell and Sync Revisers

Who volunteer?

I've never done anything like this before, but since I really like the movie and want my English-speaking friends to be able to watch it and understand it, I went ahead and started fixing the current English subtitles.

Let me tell you: it's a lot of work! I've covered the first 30 minutes of the film, and after that my head was banging  The thing is, even though I really like the movie, once I go through every line at least twice I have to admit it kinda loses its magic... :(

I haven't given up on it yet, so please be patient. I will only release my version of the subtitles when I'm completely satisfied with the result - hopefully sooner than later :)

thanks

it's that one from sergiogw, i changed a few sentences and included some missing dialogues. and put some new understandable vocabulary.

Now the movie is 100% with all dialogues, not a single one is missing.

im not looking for glory (lol), since sergio guy did almost all the work, i just want help tho. download and let me know what you think of it.

I ve been so busy these last weeks that i didn't have time to join this forum.

Anyway, I got my version of the subtitles, I would be pleased if you take a look on it, and also if you bring me any suggestions to improve it. I have to say that you probably can find some mistakes, but I can garantee that it is a well done job, thanks to the millions of native language speakers who helped me with slangs, expressions, so and on. By the way, I've been living in Ireland for 5 months and still have lots to learn.
